Another gem to come out of the Climbers Open Forum at the 2010 NZAA Conference, lead by Omnitree Directors Menno Kluiters and Jelte Buddingh, was the use of 6mm Globe 5000 as a prussic cord.
As witnessed in the video taken by Drew Bristow during the testing of the rope saver configuration, a webbing sling, tied as a prussic, has the tendency to 'roll' onto its edge when under pressure. It's the thin edge of the webbing which finally cut through the 8mm Sirius (in doubled format) used on the test rope saver (out-of-shot in the video).A solution to this problem is the use of a Dyneema core (preferably polyester sheathed) rope. Trouble is, most Dyneema core ropes are only available in larger diameter formats. Enter 6mm Globe 5000 by Teufelberger as demonstrated by Omnitree.
Treetools was unaware of the availability of the 6mm Teufelberger (FSE Robline) offering until we did some research following the Climbers Open Forum. Sure enough the 16kN (WLL), 6mm Globe 5000 was definitely available.
6mm Globe 5000 has a 32-plait sheath made from soft Polyester to resist heat, chemicals and abrasion with an impregnated Dyneema SK75 core for a high break strength - perfect as a prussic loop - see a sample from Menno below.
If you fancy a change from the webbing slings currently available give 6mm Globe 5000 a try - only available in Black/Grey, prices to be confirmed - you'll have to settle for a double fisherman's knot (as per Menno's sample below) until we can confirm stitching into a loop.
