Understanding the Service Life of Your Protos Arborist Helmet

Understanding the Service Life of Your Protos Arborist Helmet

Like all thermoplastic safety helmets, the Protos Integral has a defined service life. That service life starts the day you put it to work—not when it leaves the factory (see Protos Service Life Letter here). Protos uses a high-grade thermoplastic shell. Over time, this shell loses its protective properties due to exposure to UV radiation, weather, exhaust gases, and certain solvents. Aging starts as soon as the helmet is removed from its light-proof packaging. While sealed, it remains unaffected.

Protos sets a maximum service life of five years from the sale date, confirmed by the purchase receipt and serial number. This period requires normal use with no major impacts. If your Protos suffers a significant knock, replace it immediately—even if it appears undamaged. Make sure you record the Protos serial number on the day your helmet enters service in the field (use a Sharpie to record the Date of Purchase on the white Protos DOP decal).

The inner shell does not degrade from UV exposure. However, you must clean or replace the interior textiles, ear inserts, and sound-absorbing liners every six months to maintain fit and hygiene.

For most arborists, that five-year window is realistic if the helmet is stored correctly and kept clean. Avoid exposing it to excessive sunlight when off-duty. Keep your sales record handy, and record the day the helmet entered service. Protos include a small DOP (Date of Purchase) decal on the inside of the helmet, near the serial number. Use a ‘Sharpie’ to write the date of purchase. That’s your reference point for the official service-life countdown.

If you doubt your helmet’s condition, retire it early. A fresh Protos offers the best protection and, for gear taking daily knocks in the canopy, is a smart investment.
